El señor Matsuda

Los niños del barrio conjeturan acerca del sr. Matsuda, un japonés que ha llegado a vivir al vecindario e instalado un vivero, prejuiciados por las películas de guerra donde los nipones son siempre los malos. Se da entonces para uno de ellos, el protagonista de este relato, la oportunidad de trabajar con el nuevo vecino, ayudándole durante el verano en el vivero. Así comienza a florecer una amistad entre estas dos personas de diferentes generaciones y nacionalidades, enterándose el pequeño no solo de que su nuevo amigo luchó en la Segunda Guerra Mundial y tuvo la desgracia de ver y vivir en carne propia cuando Estados Unidos lanzó la bomba atómica de Hiroshima, sino además que en un conflicto bélico ser el malo o bueno es algo muy relativo y depende de quién haya ganado la guerra o escrito la historia. Por su parte, el sr. Matsuda aprende del niño que las tradiciones siempre se pueden flexibilizar cuando se trata de tener cerca de la familia.

The neighborhood kids speculate about mr. Matsuda, a Japanese who has come to live in the neighborhood and set up a nursery, prejudiced by war movies where the Japanese are always the bad guys. It is then given to one of them, the protagonist of this story, the opportunity to work with the new neighbor, helping him during the summer in the nursery. This is how a friendship begins to blossom between these two people of different generations and nationalities, the little boy learning not only that his new friend fought in World War II and had the misfortune to see and live firsthand when the United States dropped the atomic bomb of Hiroshima, but also that in a war conflict being the bad guy or the good guy is something very relative and depends on who won the war or wrote history. For his part, Mr. Matsuda learns from the boy that traditions can always be relaxed when it comes to having family close.
